The Oriental region, despite its rich agricultural and natural potential, faces major economic and social challenges that hinder its sustainable development. High poverty rates, particularly in rural areas, and marked socioeconomic inequalities are evidence of the structural difficulties facing this region. These issues are exacerbated by increasingly unpredictable climatic conditions, such as the historic drought that struck the region in 2022, further weakening rural populations, many of whom live directly from agriculture. Globalization and rising food and energy prices have also contributed to a more unstable economic environment, exacerbating precariousness and food insecurity.
In this context, the Rural Development Support Project in the Eastern Mountains (PADERMO) represents a strategic response to the multiple challenges facing this region. Supported by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), this project aims to improve the living conditions of rural populations by strengthening their resilience to climate change and stimulating local economic development. Through a series of targeted initiatives, including diversification of income sources, promotion of entrepreneurship, and empowerment of women and youth, PADERMO aims to drive sustainable, inclusive, and resilient rural development.
This quarterly report aims to provide a detailed overview of the activities carried out under this project, highlighting the actions taken by each member of the Technical Assistance (TA) team in accordance with their terms of reference. This report includes an assessment of the constraints encountered during the past period and proposes an action plan for the coming period, with the aim of ensuring optimal project implementation and adjusting interventions to the specific needs of rural populations in the region.
